We know the problem and have a solution, for the problem of a bicycle rider being visible in low light/dark conditions to approaching motorists using the road, is currently lacking. Present bicycle lighting consists of headlights, that serve to make the approaching road surface visible to the bicycle rider and manifest a point light source as the signal to approaching motorists, and tail-lights that emanate a red light rearward as the signal to alert motorists approaching form the rear.Other lights are added to the helmet and clothing to increase rider visibility.When this sort of lighting is used, there is no illumination of the rider.The Safety Illumination of Rider Light, the SIR Light, makes the rider visible with 360° Illumination to approaching vehicles.

How the idea became a reality:
I commuted from Long Beach, CA to Los Angeles using a surface rail public transportation system called the blue line.On my first morning at 5 am in dark conditions, I was almost run over by a car exiting a driveway.This occurred despite the flashing strobe headlight and rear red taillight.I thought he had seen me when entering his car.A passion was born that day to improve rider visibility.I knew there had to be a better way. The existing products on the market then as well as now, do not address this crucial issue.
City of Long Beach, California Promotes Bicycling: On an interesting note, Long Beach, CA built a bicycle commuter station at the terminus of the Blue Line where commuters could park their bikes in a secure parking facility for a small fee.Kudos is extended to the leaders of the City of Long Beach for their progressive program. Personal Bicycling Experience: I became an avid cyclist in fourth decade of life because my knees could no longer tolerate jogging.My wife and I decided to train for RAGBRAI, an organized annual ride across the state of Iowa with 8000 other cyclists.It is 450-500 miles in length over 7 days.We went on to do RAGBRAI 8 times.We could leave our small children with her parents, who lived in Iowa, while we enjoyed each other RAGBRAI for one week knowing our children were in safe hands. We have also taken organized bike vacations in Vermont during the fall foliage change and a wine country ride through NAPA and Sonoma counties.I also presently use my bicycle to commute to work and for local shopping and errands.
